On Friday Art in Bloom Gallery in Wilmington will unveil “DREAMS in Bloom,” an exhibition juried by three teens from DREAMS of Wilmington. The nonprofit dedicated to building creative, committed citizens through free programming in the literary, visual, multimedia and performing arts.
The exhibition features selection of nature-inspired work from DREAMS students and instructors. Read the bios of the jurors below — written by the jurors themselves — and get ready for the reception Friday, 6 to 8 p.m.
“I am interested in many forms of art.”
My name is Ashley Bennette, and I am 14 years old. I am interested in many forms of art. I play bass in a band called the Black and Blue DaVincis. I also design jewelry, particularly in metal and leather mediums. Moreover, I am an actress, and I will be in a play this summer. I aspire to be a physical therapist who works with either the elderly or with children, and I hope to continue my path as a musician.
“My background in the arts began with dance, specifically ballet.”
My name is Nydheri Brown. I am 13 years old. I have been a DREAMer for about five years. I’m an aspiring metalsmith. I’m really proud to have participated in Wilmington Fashion Week and have my work featured the past two years. My background in the arts began with dance, specifically ballet. My favorite character was Zoe from “Sesame Street” and she loved ballet. The first time I felt like “I can do this, I am an artist” was when I made my first piece of pottery. I felt a sense of confidence when I used the pottery wheel. My involvement in the arts has helped me recognize that I have a lot of options when it comes to choosing a career. I could be a designer of jewelry or clothes. If I had the means and funds to do any art project, it would be an upcycled Lego character.
“The thing that I love about art is the creativity.”
My name is Jemerit Miguel Roberts and I was born in Wilmington, North Carolina on September 27, 2002. I love art and someday wish to be a professional basketball player. The thing that I love about art is the creativity, and how you can use your mind to make anything. Also my mother and grandmother draw, too. My mom uses acrylic paint and color pencil, and my grandmother uses charcoal. It has been a generational thing for the three of us, so that’s where I got my artistic skill from. Basketball has been another thing I have loved for a long time. If I go to the NBA, it will be a dream come true.
