SPARKcon, spanning 1.9 million square feet, will transform the streets of downtown Raleigh in a creative takeover Thursday through Sunday. ArtsNow shares the inside scoop on how to get the most out of your SPARKcon weekend.
From the organizers: 3 tips for planning your SPARKcon weekend
Tip 1: Start your festival experience at the information tent, located at the intersection of Martin and Fayetteville Streets. There, the full schedule of weekend events will be available with friendly helpers ready to answer any questions you might have about the weekend happenings.
Tip 2: Chose your mode of transportation! SPARKcon will begin activating the streets of downtown Raleigh early Friday morning, so consider using public transportation to get to the festival. The Moore Square Bus Station is located just 1.5 blocks from the heart of SPARKcon and Raleigh’s FREE R-Line is also a great option for getting around to the festival. Plus, comedySPARK will offer live stand up comedy during your ride!
Tip 3: See all that’s happening before arriving! SPARKcon does showcase some amazing chalk art but the festival is so much more than that. For example, there’s the fashionSPARK runway show in a fountain, over 10 free danceSPARK workshops open to anyone, a Poem Bot, and over 20 film screenings throughout the weekend.
“The SPARKcon weekend makes it easy for people to see and do a lot on a big spectrum, says, Laken Geiger, programs manager at VAE Raleigh, the producing organization of SPARKcon.
“Because there are 14 SPARK categories hosting a set of events, people can go to a film screening and then straight to a dance workshop and decide — on their way to a theatre costume design exhibition — to try out some VR and see what it would be like to have unicorns roaming at Dix Park, and even catch an aerial silk showcase too.”
“With so much going on, some events happen simultaneously and some overlap,” Geiger says. “Going into the festival with some idea of the things you want to see and try is the best way to take full advantage of the FREE fun.”
